History:
Not too, too much is known about Oswin Oswald’s background before the crash of the Starship Alaska. One can infer that she lived with mother, seeing as she was mentioned before. No mention of a father, but we’ll assume she lived with him as well. As a child and young adult, she had ambitions for space travel, wanting to see the universe some way or another. We can also infer that Oswin learned to hack into computers at some point in her life, and was an extremely bright child and teenager.
Her opportunity to see the universe came in form of the Starship Alaska. They needed a Junior Entertainment Manager and Oswin needed a lift to the stars. It might have only been a cruise ship, but she was willing to take anything by that point. And so, she was signed on. Unfortunately, they weren’t out for more than a day when the Alaska crashed into a nearby planet. Said planet turned out to be the Dalek asylum, where the most advanced warrior race in the universe kept their insane.
Most of the crew was killed on impact, but somehow, Oswin survived unharmed. Climbing a ladder out of the ship, she wandered the corridors of the asylum, trying to find a way out. On the planet, the Daleks had installed a nanocloud, small microbes in that would convert any organic matter, living or dead, into a Dalek puppet. However, Oswin wasn’t so lucky. Because of her genius mind, the Daleks performed a full conversion, transforming her from a human into a Dalek, and stuck her in the very heart of the Asylum.
Unable to face the reality of what happened, Oswin retreated into her mind, dreaming up a world where she was perfectly human and trapped in the wreckage of the Alaska and awaiting rescue. She stayed that way for a year, unaware of what she had become and sending out signals.
During this year, Oswin fancied that the Daleks were attempting to gain entry to her room. It's theorized that this was the conversion attempting to take over. However, even in her dream world and totally unaware that there even was a conversion going on, Oswin was strong enough to keep herself human on a subconscious level. This was achieved by baking souffles, of all things, in her little world, even if she wasn't good at it. Just this simple activity kept her human. On the inside, that is.
Oswin remained this way until her signal was finally picked up by the Dalek ship, more specifically, by the Time Lord known as the Doctor. The Daleks were sending him down to the asylum to shut off the force-field from within, but Oswin wasn’t aware of this plan until they spoke again, when he’d arrived at his destination. From there, Oswin helped to guide the Doctor, and his friends, Rory and Amy, all while gleefully flirting with both Rory and the Doctor. Opening doors and guiding them through passageways, Oswin finally guided first Rory and then Amy and the Doctor to a transport pad within the asylum’s chambers.
Once there, the Doctor told Oswin that he would come for her while Rory stayed with Amy, who was in the process of being converted into a Dalek puppet by the nanocloud. She guided him further, to Intensive Care, where Daleks who were survivors of the Time War were kept. Upon noticing the Doctor’s presence, these Daleks suddenly came out of their catatonic states and began to go after him, finally cornering him against a door that Oswin was attempting to open. However, instead of getting it open, Oswin simply erased all information having to do with the Doctor from the Pathweb, the network connecting the Daleks together.
Oswin opened the door once the Daleks had retreated and the Doctor entered, only to find her true fate. Her world was rattled to the core as it was revealed to her that she had been a Dalek all along, and at that moment, her mind weakened enough to let the Dalek nature seep though. She very nearly exterminated the Doctor, but her human side regained control just in time to stop herself.
Coming to a realization that she’d probably be better off giving herself to save the Doctor and his friends, Oswin told him to run to the teleport pad and took down the shields surrounding the asylum. Amy, Rory and the Doctor escaped, and the last we see of Oswin is her asking the Doctor to remember her.
Personality:
Probably the first thing you're going to learn about Oswin is that she's one of the cleverest people you'll ever meet, in more ways that one. She is exceptionally intelligent, enough so that she was converted fully into a Dalek because of it. Bright and crafty, Oswin is every bit the girl genius she claims to be, and she's not afraid to make sure the world knows it. In fact, she's more than happy to gleefully proclaim her skills to the world if it's bought up somehow in conversation. And forget it if someone actually have need of her hacking skills, because she'll jump right in as loudly as possible and help out.
She possesses a definite playful side, though at times her fun is had at the expense of others. Oswin isn't malicious in her trolling, but she does have a tendency to tease, especially if she finds someone particularly shy. It's all good-natured through, and if she were seriously asked to stop, it's probable that she would. Flirting is something that come naturally to her. It takes a lot for her to be thrown completely off, and even in dangerous situations, Oswin's not beyond throwing snark around and generally making light of it. Danger doesn't seem to faze her unless it's immediate, and really, she'd welcome a bit of danger if it meant adventure.
More than anything else and for her entire life, Oswin has wanted to see the universe. A life trapped on Earth is certainly not for her, and her adventurous spirit eventually led her to the Starship: Alaska. Perhaps working on a starliner wasn't the most glamorous of lifestyles, but it was enough for Oswin to just be there. And, when the Alaska crashed, she was the first one to suit up and go off to explore this new planet that they'd crashed on. And, really, by this point, prolonged exposure to normality bores her to tears. Actually, Oswin is easily bored or distracted when left to herself, unless she's in front of a computer screen. Hacking and coding is one of the only things that can keep her engaged for long periods of time, if one needs her to keep still.
Because of her previous experience of being stuck in one place for a year, as well as her rather bad case of wanderlust, Oswin isn't too fond of being trapped anywhere, which is going to be a bit of a problem in Teleios. Confinement makes her nervous and restless and eventually, she's going to be faced with either getting used to being in one place or breaking down over an intensely slow process. Escape attempts might also be a thing at first, but they're not really going to go anywhere.
Having survived a Dalek conversion with her humanity intact (on the inside, if not on the outside), Oswin proves to be incredibly strong of mind to be able to cling to something so hardly. Unfortunately, if things begin to be problematic for her, she's one for shoving her own problems aside and pretending like nothing's wrong. Unless she's triggered by something, Oswin tries to ignore hard choices and realities, and while this worked somewhat to her advantage in the asylum, it's not really going to do so outside it's walls and while she's human again. Moving forward is her normal plan of action, and while she tries not to linger on anything, it's hard, given her past. However, when its time and things rely on it, Oswin can eventually face her reality and deal with it.
She proves to be extremely brave and willing to sacrifice herself when she gives her life so that the Doctor, Amy and Rory can escape the asylum. In the end, Oswin is strong enough to repress the Dalek instinct to exterminate, and proves that her humanity and she herself is stronger than any conversion.
When it comes to people, Oswin tends to keep them at arm's length for a little while, but that hardly means that she's unfriendly. On the contrary, she's actually quite so, and chatty enough to keep up her end of conversation. She doesn't distrust for long, but the gruesome details of her past are reserved for only the closest, unless circumstances call for it. And by circumstances, I mean someone actually asking "Hey, were you ever a Dalek, by any chance?" But, needless to say, Oswin likes people and makes friends fairly easily. She has an outgoing nature and really isn't one to just sit back and let things happen to her.
She also enjoys baking, opera and long walks on the beach. So long as that beach is on another planet.
Powers/Abilties:
- Genius Intellect: Oswin is smart. Very, very, very smart. Her area of expertise lies within computers and technology, but she's not half bad with science and inventing either. Basically, if it's got something to do with technology at all, Oswin has to know-how to do pretty much anything with it. All of her knowledge is self-taught, save for the few basic facts that anyone would learn in your average 4023 public school.
- Hacking Skills: Though her ability to hack into things was accelerated when she was technically in the body of a Dalek, Oswin still possesses the ability to hack into any piece of technology she can get her hands on. Computers are her specialty, but she's certainly not limited them. Give her the proper tools and she can pretty much rewire and work with anything.
- Baking?: When not hacking everything you love, Oswin enjoys baking to pass the time. Really, the only thing she can't manage are souffles, despite having spent a year making them. But! Anything else is perfectly manageable.
Appearance:
Probably the first thing you're going to notice about Oswin is her height. She's only about 5'2", and doesn't really cut an intimidating figure at all. But, it's good for getting into small places, and Oswin definitely doesn't let her height effect her that much. If anything, she's chalking up the advantages she has. Her hair is dark brown and just a little bit past shoulder length, curling at the ends. At times she'll have it tied back in a ponytail, mostly when she's baking and wants to keep it out of her face, but at any given moment, it's probably loose. Her eyes are of the same color, if a little richer.
For someone as feisty as Oswin is, her features are rather soft. Dimples show when she smiles or grins and overall one would say her appearance is rather 'cute.' Her features are somewhat round, and those dark brown eyes are forever sparkling with some form of mischief or wonder. The rest of Oswin is, as mentioned, rather small. But, despite her size, she does cut a rather nice figure, and could easily be described as pretty or beautiful, under the right circumstances.
